Daniel G. Baird’s work addresses ideas endemic to the Western cultural milieu, often questioning notions of technological progress, the artist’s gesture, and the sublime.  Through an engagement with cave systems, fossils, and technological developments, Baird is interested in exploring our understanding of our place within the vast and complex lineage of time, and our acceptance of both the grounding and the surrendering to “moment,” which becomes a mere memory just as fast as it is experienced. Our place within time runs parallel to a myriad of simultaneous histories, from the stories of all man, to the technologies and advancements that function as markers of progress. Baird’s practice is a layered archeological exploration of these markers, the symbols that function as records for our enigmatic relationship with time and progression.
