Carmen Winant
The Neighbor, The Friend, The Lover
January 29 - March 3, 2022

Carmen Winant, born 1983, is an American feminist, author and visual artist. Together with her partner Luke Stettner and sons Carlo and Rafa, she lives and works in Columbus, USA with a professorship at Ohio State University. Carmen Winant had her big breakthrough in the exhibition New Photography 2018 at MoMA, New York, where in the artwork My Birth she taped two thousand birth pictures directly on the wall. Carmen Winant’s medium is photography but not with the camera in hand, but it is the collection of physical images and the analog collage that is her brush and color. In her artistic work, Carmen tries to reconstruct, challenge and broaden the feminist perspective. The expression of the works of art can alternate between explicitly embarrassing and more subtly communicating. The Neighbor, The Friend, The Lover belong to the latter category. The exhibition’s suggestive presentation creates an ambiguous but at the same time poetic and finely tuned story. The illuminated images generate an underlying narrative that challenges our ingrained notions of, sexuality, power and belonging. The exhibition at Gävle konstcentrum is the artist’s first institutional solo presentation in Sweden.
