Launched in 2017, South Arts’ Southern Prize & State Fellows project supports some of the best contemporary art in the American South. This exhibition presents work from the nine 2021 fellowship recipients, one from each state within the South Arts region. An independent jury selected the nine state fellows, each receiving a $5,000 award. A second jury panel selected two finalists for the Southern Prize. South Carolina’s Fletcher Williams III was the runner-up, or Southern Prize Finalist, and received an additional $10,000; Florida’s Marielle Plaisir won the Southern Prize, receiving another $25,000.
The current traveling show is the third rendition of the Southern Prize & State Fellows exhibition, the first one of which resulted in 2019 from a partnership between 701 CCA and South Arts.
On view January 20 through March 6, 2022
