PATRON is proud to announce our participation at Frieze NY 2024 in the Focus Section, featuring a solo presentation of new work by New York-based conceptual artist Charisse Pearlina Weston (b.1988).

Weston’s interrogation into the materials of glass, language, and photography embraces precarity, obfuscation, and collapse as mediums through which to explore the social construction of Black interiority. Through the use of varied methods of repetition, concealment, and enfoldment, processes which she terms ‘Black tactics of refusal,’ the artist positions Black interior life and intimacy as sites of resistance that counter the ideological apparatuses central to technologies of surveillance. This project considers how these ideological frameworks undergird the social and infrastructural politics of space that worry Black presence. In her poetic handling of materials past and present, Weston articulates the ways in which Blackness shapeshifts, disperses, and reemerges in spite of them.
