Interested in the physical and visceral qualities of paint, Claire Sherman explores the ways in which landscape painting could be utilized within a conceptual practice. Eschewing the horizon line, or the vista, Sherman draws on actual locations (some she has visited in life, some only through photography) that expanded into invented places. The result of close looking, Sherman’s paintings speak to the rapidly changing natural world, as much as the intimate relationship between the viewer’s body and the landscape.
