Drawing on personal and collective history, Nour Malas translates lived experience into a poetic visual language where past and present collapse into one another. Malas’s physical, gestural approach to painting, drawing, and installation is driven by an inert impulse to give form to the emotional states of living. Spending her formative years between Europe and the Middle East, before studying in London and Chicago, Malas’s work is informed by her experience of cultural hybridity, transforming diverse legacies of song, poetry, music, and visual culture into abstraction.
